A section of Why We Broke Up that had the intention
of hooking the reader's attention was this line in the beginning when Min said,
"You know I want to be a director, but you could never truly see the
movies in my head and that Ed, is why we broke up" (Handler 4). Who is
saying this? Why does she want to be a director? Who is Ed? Why did they break
up? What movie is in her head? How long were they dating? How did they meet? How
old are they? Where do they live? Why could Ed not truly see the movie?
Those
are all questions Daniel Handler intended for you to ask yourself when she
wrote that line. That line is like a mystery when it is by itself. And with
every mystery there are questions you ask and to find the answers to all those
questions you have to dig deeper into the mystery. The author had this line
placed in the last paragraph of the first chapter where is show the letter Min
wrote to Ed. The reason it was put there was so not only for you as the reader
but also for Ed, because this whole book is written from Min to Ed.
