Entry 4 Summer Assignment

The reason why I chose the book Why We Broke Up to be my summer reading book out of all the choices on the list is because when I looked at the list and read through all the titles this one seemed like the most interesting, most relatable, and least boring. And yes I just read through the titles and the few that sounded interesting I looked for what the book was about and if that wasn't boring, and there was only one that wasn't very boring, got to be the book I had to read.  A connection I had with Min was when Min went through a certain event, and went through every little detail. What was said, where you were at, who was there, and when it was. That something that I do, I will look back at an event and go through everything, now I don't have a souvenir like Min does. But just like Min I have the memories.

This book is kind of a girly book. That goes back to the fact that this book is about a relationship and about their break up. Since it is in the point of view of Min, who is a girl, you see a girl's point of view of a relationship. You see that Min will go through literally every detail of the memory that is connected to the one souvenir she kept.

Entry 3 Summer Assignment

A section of Why We Broke Up that had the intention of hooking the reader's attention was this line in the beginning when Min said, "You know I want to be a director, but you could never truly see the movies in my head and that Ed, is why we broke up" (Handler 4). Who is saying this? Why does she want to be a director? Who is Ed? Why did they break up? What movie is in her head? How long were they dating? How did they meet? How old are they? Where do they live? Why could Ed not truly see the movie?

Those are all questions Daniel Handler intended for you to ask yourself when she wrote that line. That line is like a mystery when it is by itself. And with every mystery there are questions you ask and to find the answers to all those questions you have to dig deeper into the mystery. The author had this line placed in the last paragraph of the first chapter where is show the letter Min wrote to Ed. The reason it was put there was so not only for you as the reader but also for Ed, because this whole book is written from Min to Ed.

Entry 2 Summer Reading

In Why We Broke Up the only complex character is Min. In the book Min's desire is to go through all the souvenirs she kept from when she and Ed were dating, to go through all the memories, to 1) get over Ed and 2) find the reason or reasons why they broke up. The theme that is beginning to appear is remembrance. You know that remembrance is the theme because the whole book Min is going through all the memories she made with Ed when they were dating. Min was remembering all the good times she spent with Ed along with the bad times.

The way my book is structured is there are about 37 chapters and with the start of each chapter there is a picture. Each picture is different, because each chapter is a different memory. And each picture is of each of the souvenirs Min saved. In each chapter Min goes through her point of view of each date Min and Ed have ever been on. Min goes through all the motions and speech, she remembers every little thing each of them had ever said to each other, from the time they first talked to the time the last talked.

Entry One Summer Assignment

In the book I chose the main characters are Minerva, but she likes to be called Min, and Ed Slaterton. In this book there are many settings. For example there is Al's house, the Carnelian, Min's house, the Lopsided diner, Leopardi's, Metropolitan Multiplex Cinemas, and Green Mountain Hardware. To just name a few. The conflict in Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler is Min and Ed dated for a few months and Min kept a souvenir from every date they went on. Min is trying to figure out why they broke up. I think that once Min goes through every souvenir, she will be over Ed and will be happy again. This can be relatable to anyone who has ever been in a relationship that didn't have a happily ever after ending. This is also relatable to scrape bookers; this is because Min kept souvenirs and so do scrape bookers. This kind of story does not relate to any romantic movies out there since all romantic movies end with the girl and the guy happily together. And in the book it is the opposite. I think this book would make a great movie, as long as the movie stays with the book. If this was a movie it would be a totally different kind of movie that won't have a happily ever after but that's okay, there's already a ton of Cinderella's and her Prince Charming's.

Teardrop Book Trailer

This is the book trailer for Teardrop. It's interesting to see how other people think the characters look. Yes the book tells you in the book what they look like, but people still see them differently. Personally I thought that Eureka, Brooks, and Ander would look differently. I thought that Ander would have blond hair and bright blue eyes since that is how he is described in the book. I think that this book should be made into a movie. It would be such an mystery and fantasy. And it would be different then all the sci-fi movies that are coming out.

Final Blogging Assessment in English 1B

My book is very realistic. The book does take place in 2013. Even though this book is fantasy, it has a lot of realisc material in it, and that makes you forget that the book is fantasy. The main character, Eureka, is going through something that some people can realate to. Eureka's mother drowned, her dad got married to Rhoda, Eureka had two step siblings, she went to the therapist. Now comes the fantasy part, there is this boy, Ander, and he follow Eureka, he knows everything about Eureka but Eureka knows nothing about him. The only way Eureka can talk to him is when he comes to her, she has no way to find he, all she knows about him is that his name is Ander, he has blond hair and blue eyes, and that's it. Eureka is trying to solve the mystery of what her mother left her, "She nodded, patting her backpack, whivh held the ancient book and the strange blue chest. She touched her heart, where the locket lay. She held up Diana's tearstained letter, like a wave"(Kate 121). The ancient book was in a language only one person could translate. But when that one person is killed, Eureka is tries to figure out what her mystery she calls her life has become. On top of that, Eureka is also trying to figure out what the Thunderstone is, which was in the blue chest. In the letter Diana wrote she inscribed this about the Thunderstone,"P.P.S. Don't unnwrap the guaze until you need to. You'll know when the time comes"(Kate 123). So now Eureka whole life has became a real life mystery that she is trying to figure out.
^This is what I believe the ancient book would look like.

^This is what I believe the blue chest would look like. Execpt it would contain a baseball size ball of gauze that's protecting the Thunderstone. In another part of the letter from Diana it said, "P.S. About the thunderstone . . . Beneath the layer of gauze liesa a worked-stone artifact shaped like a triangle. Some cultures call them elf-arrows; they are believed to ward off storms. Thunderstones are found amoung the remains of most ancient civilizations throughout the world. Remember the arrowheads we unearthed in India? Think of them as distant cousins. This particular thunderstone's origin is unkown, which makes her all the more deat to those who give themselves permission to imagine the possibilities"(Kate 123). Since "no one" knows much about this stone it justs adds on to Eureka's mystery.

Text to World Connection

My book is in the third person view of a Senior in high school, Eureka. So I can see how the author portays how they think high school these days is like. I think that this sentence sums up what our school is like in the mornings, "The hallway was choked with shouting kids, and the seed of a headache was splitting open and sprouting a razorwire beanstalk in Eureka's brain"(Kate 254). I know that in the morning, on the third floor, even though its the morning people are always wide awake when they come back from the weekend and have to tell all their friends what happened this weekend. With about 900 people in our grade and all of them are talking, it gets loud. So I think Lauren Kate did a great job of how high school is.

Making You Think

In my book there was this one paragraph that got me thinking, "'Imagine a furture civilization examing some of the artifacts you or I might leave behind' Margaret continued. 'What would the people think of us? How might our brightest innovations- our iPads, solar panels, or credit cards- appear to distant generations'"(Kate 215). Just think about what was said. If you make a time capsole and put some of the technology we have today. What would the people that find the time capsole, years from now, think? Would they think that the technology we have is old? Or what if you put in a notebook with some of the common words that we use. YOLO, swag, selfie. Would they think we were weird? Just think about how far the world has come.

The names in my book

Teardrop has some very strange names that I've never heard of before. The main characters name is Eureka. Her step mothers name is Rhoda. Her best friends name is Brooks. Her mothers name is Diana. The random guy that know everything about Eureka name is Ander. Ander's aunt's name is Chora. For me, these aren't normal names that I hear everyday. This book does take place in the south U.S., so I dont know if these names are more common down there.

Krista Ramsey Introduction Activity

http://www.cincinnati.com/story/opinion/columnists/krista-ramsey/2014/02/15/krista-locking-into-the-magic-of-legos/5521245/

This column is about kids and there legos. It tells you the love they have for them, the parents thoughts about them, how captivating they are, and the joy they bring to the kids and the parents.

A line I think is the best written is "Then feet will pad up the basement stairs to show parents what's been created. And they'll pad right back down to tear it apart and move on to freestyle". The reason I think this is the best line is because of the diction, syntax, and tone. I really liked the diction in this sentence because it tops off the whole story. Krista Ramsey could have just said, the child run upstairs to show their parents what they made. Then they went back downstairs tore what they made apart and made something else. But she didn't, she used elevated diction. I also liked the syntax, I like this because when a sentence ends that is showing a new part of the story starts and I really liked that. And I also liked the tone of this sentence. The tone of this sentence is happy and that's also the tone of the whole column. When the tone of what you're reading is happy, you're happy.

Krista Ramsey's writing style is journalistic. I know this because 1) she writes column and when I think of columns, I think of new papers 2)she writes in a professional way that's easy for people to read and 3)she is reviewing a certain event which is usually what people in  news papers do. An example of her writing that shows it journalistic is,"At 5 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month, a long line of small- to medium-sized children snakes along the main concourse of Kenwood Towne Centre." This quote shows her style is journalistic because she is telling the reader about a certain place, time, and event.

3 Questions:
  • Does someone come to here and ask her to review a event that person/group is hosting?
  • How long has Krista Ramsey been a professional writer?
  • When did Krista Ramsey know that show wanted to be a writer?

Why I chose my book

Teardrop. Doesn't that just sound interesting? The title was part of the reason why I chose my book. Also the cover. When I was at the store looking at books, this cover stood out to me. After I read the inside cover, it sounded really good. From the inside cover you could tell that this book will have a mysterious feel to it. This is also the first book in the Teardrop series, so after I finish this book I wouldn't be looking for a book.

Waves

"Anything from a slight dip in temperature to the velocity of the wind to the texture of the sea floor could alter the wave's dynamic"(Kate 2). This quote got me to wonder about what actually happens to waves. So I looked into what this quote is saying particularly. I found a website that haves you more information about waves. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_wave

Setting

"So here, now, in the soft heat of a late Florida spring, with blue herons chasing white egrets through a black opal sky, and the stillness of the water around him. . ."(Kate 2). This quote is telling that this book will take place in Florida. Base on the title of the book and what I've read so far I predict that the book will have a lot to do with water. This quote tells you a lot about the setting. You can put yourself in here. You have sight, feel, you can infer the sound of the water, and you can also infer the smell of the salt water. I also predict that the setting will stay in Florida.
