The theme of Speechless is even if something is right and everyone is telling you that it’s wrong, don’t be afraid to do it, no matter what the consequences will be. After what happened at Kristen’s New Year’s Eve party incident, Chelsea know who caused it. She was told to not tell anyone, but everyone in school knows that Chelsea doesn’t know how to keep something like this just to herself. “I can play dumb like Kristen said. No one has to hear it from me. I can stay quiet, even if no one else steps forward. Even if it means Warren and Joey get away with this. Even if Noah never wakes up. What if he doesn’t? And what if no one points the finger at Warren and Joey? If that happens, can I really live with myself?”(Harrington, 34). Chelsea had to separate what she knew was right and what her friends wanted her to do.
This website shows a interview with the author of Speechless, Hannah Harrington. She talks about why she written the book like she did, the main character, and about bullying.
